Released on August 12, their self-titled fifth album—universally known as The Black Album—marked a dramatic evolution in the band's sound. Working with producer Bob Rock, Metallica moved away from the long, complex arrangements of their earlier records toward something heavier, more direct, and monumental. “Enter Sandman,” “The Unforgiven,” “Nothing Else Matters,” and “Sad but True” introduced their music to an audience far beyond the underground metal scene.
