On November 16, 2000, Houston lost Robert Earl Davis Jr., better known as DJ Screw, at only 29 years old. His life was brief, but the sound he created would permanently alter the course of Southern hip-hop.
What began as a distinctly Houston underground sound eventually traveled far beyond the city. Screw's approach to tempo, atmosphere, and repetition can be heard throughout generations of Southern rap and later hip-hop, R&B, pop, and experimental music. His influence became so culturally significant that his tapes, equipment, photographs, records, and personal materials are now preserved by the University of Houston as the DJ Screw Collection.
