1989 marked an extraordinary second chapter for The B-52’s. Four years after the death of founding guitarist Ricky Wilson, the Athens, Georgia band returned with Cosmic Thing—an album that transformed a group once considered too strange for mainstream radio into international pop stars.
Co-produced by Nile Rodgers and Don Was, the record preserved the band’s eccentric mixture of new wave, funk, surf rock, retro Americana, and camp while giving it a bigger, more polished sound. “Love Shack” and “Roam” became enormous hits, introducing The B-52’s unmistakable world of beehive hair, thrift-store style, surreal humor, and uninhibited dancing to an entirely new generation.
