Formed in Stockholm in 1983 and driven by the vision of Tomas “Quorthon” Forsberg, Bathory became one of the foundational forces behind black metal. Their earliest records pushed the raw aggression of thrash and speed metal into something colder and more primitive—harsh vocals, deliberately abrasive production, relentless guitars, and an atmosphere that would become central to the genre.
By 1987’s Under the Sign of the Black Mark, that vision had fully taken shape. The album’s cavernous production, darkness, and uncompromising approach became a crucial blueprint for the Scandinavian black metal movement that emerged in the early 1990s.
