Few groups are as fundamental to the history of Jamaican music as Toots & The Maytals. Formed in the early 1960s and led by Frederick “Toots” Hibbert, the group evolved alongside Jamaica’s music itself—moving through ska and rocksteady before helping shape the sound that would become reggae.
In 1968, The Maytals released “Do the Reggay,” widely credited as the first popular recording to use the word “reggae” and helping give the emerging genre its name. Songs like “54-46 That’s My Number,” “Monkey Man,” “Sweet and Dandy,” and “Pressure Drop” followed, combining Jamaican rhythms with the gospel and soul influence behind Toots’ unmistakably powerful voice.
