Head tilted back and completely immersed in the performance, Holiday is captured in the very environment where her influence was being cemented. Gottlieb photographed many of the defining figures of jazz's golden era, but this image of Holiday would become one of the most enduring photographs of his career.
Known as “Lady Day,” Holiday fundamentally changed the role of the jazz vocalist.
